American Airlines has taken legal action against the city of Chicago over a dispute involving gate space at O’Hare International Airport. This airport serves as a hub for both American and United Airlines, making it a key location for both carriers.
American Airlines claims that United is trying to push it out of the airport to become the only major airline operating there. According to American’s lawsuit, filed in federal court in Chicago, United’s long-term goals for O’Hare do not include American Airlines.
The conflict began earlier this year when United requested a review of how gates are used at O’Hare. The Chicago Department of Aviation responded with an initial decision on April 1. American Airlines disagreed with this decision, arguing that the review took place too early according to city policy. The city plans to finalize its decision by June 1, with changes expected to take effect on October 1.
United Airlines has stated that the proposed changes would provide it with six new gates to support its expansion at O’Hare. While American Airlines acknowledges that these gates are not being taken from its current operations, it believes that giving United more gates will weaken its competitive position in Chicago. In response, American has announced plans to add 17 new destinations from O’Hare this year.
As of now, United has declined to comment on the lawsuit, and representatives from the Chicago law department have not responded to requests for information outside of regular business hours. This legal battle highlights the fierce competition between airlines, especially at one of the busiest airports in the world.
