BioLab Will Not Reconstruct Chlorine Plant Due to Previous Incidents of Fires, Explosions, and Toxic Emissions

BioLab Inc. has announced that it will not rebuild its chlorine manufacturing plant in Conyers, Georgia, following a serious fire that occurred on September 29. This decision comes after the company struggled to resume operations at the facility, which has a history of dangerous incidents, including explosions and chemical fires that have affected nearby communities.

In a statement, BioLab explained that they have explored alternative production methods to meet customer demands. However, after careful consideration, they decided it would be best not to restart manufacturing at the Conyers site. Instead, the company will continue to operate its distribution center in Conyers, fulfilling orders from other production facilities.

The September fire created a large cloud of orange and black smoke, prompting local residents to shelter in place. Schools in the area were closed, and a major interstate was shut down due to safety concerns. The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board released findings that indicated BioLab had improperly stored hazardous materials at the plant. The company faced six violations, including four serious ones, and could face penalties exceeding $60,000.

BioLab specializes in making chemicals used to treat water, particularly for swimming pools and hot tubs. The plant is located about 25 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta. Despite the closure of the manufacturing facility, the company emphasized its commitment to the safety and well-being of the Conyers community as it moves forward.
