Erie Insurance has restored online access for customers, including bill payment services, after a network outage that began on June 7. The company took its systems offline to contain a security threat. So far, Erie says there is no sign of ransomware or ongoing malicious activity. They have not confirmed any data breach but are still investigating if any information was affected.
The insurer is bringing back full system operations in stages, focusing first on local agents, claims, and customer care to keep services running smoothly.
Around the same time, Philadelphia Insurance Companies also faced a network issue. The company shut down its systems on June 9 after spotting suspicious activity. This outage impacted phone, email, and online services. Philadelphia Insurance insists this was not a ransomware attack and no files were encrypted. They are slowly restoring their core systems, with some employees regaining access to key resources like email. The company says it will notify customers if any personal data was accessed.
While neither company has revealed much about who caused the attacks, security experts from Google’s Threat Intelligence Group link these incidents to a hacking group called Scattered Spider. This group has shifted its focus recently from targeting retailers to going after insurance companies. They may also be connected to a possible breach at Aflac.
Both Erie and Philadelphia Insurance are working hard to get back to normal, putting customer service first while assessing the full impact of these cyber threats.
