Four Dead After Flooding in Arizona, Including in Historic Mining Town

Heavy rain caused severe flooding in parts of Arizona, leading to the deaths of four people and widespread damage. The hardest-hit area was Globe, a small mining town about 88 miles east of Phoenix. In just one day, the town received around 2.5 inches of rain, which quickly turned streets into rivers and forced residents to take refuge on rooftops.

One of the most dangerous spots was a propane distributorship in downtown Globe, where floodwaters swept about 1,000 propane tanks into the streets. Hazmat teams were called in, but thankfully, none of the tanks caught fire or exploded.

Two bodies were found inside a vehicle and another person was found in the floodwaters in Globe. Nearby, in suburban Phoenix, a fourth victim was found near a submerged car in a park after floodwaters receded. Emergency crews discovered the body after it was trapped under a bridge.

The flooding also affected the nearby mining town of Miami, where streets were underwater, though no injuries were reported. About 20 tourists were stranded on the Havasupai Reservation, a remote area known for its striking blue-green waterfalls. These visitors were safely evacuated after floodwaters blocked the usual foot, mule, and helicopter access.

Local authorities in Globe have launched a large search and rescue operation to find anyone who might still be missing. Officials warn people not to go out into the flood zones, as it can interfere with rescue dogs trying to locate victims. Instead, residents are encouraged to help neighbors and friends who might need support.

Globe’s city council declared a state of emergency, with Mayor Al Gameros noting the flood was unlike anything they had seen before. Many buildings downtown were damaged, and volunteers have stepped up to help. The priority remains rescuing those in danger and making sure the community stays safe.

This intense rain and rapid flooding happened near the canyons that channel mountain water straight into town, making the area vulnerable, especially after a wildfire in 2021 had already changed the landscape.

At this moment, rescue teams continue working hard amid the ongoing storms, hoping to find anyone still trapped or missing while dealing with dangerous conditions across the region.
