Georgia Countertop Manufacturer Fined for Silica Dust Exposure to Workers

A countertop manufacturing company in Georgia has been hit with a $33,000 fine for putting its workers at risk of inhaling dangerous silica dust. Brazilian Stone Design, based in Powder Springs, was penalized by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) after investigations showed the company failed to protect employees from the harmful dust that can lead to serious lung diseases like silicosis.

According to OSHA, the company did not require workers to wear respirators, nor did it provide proper fit testing and training for those who used them. In addition, Brazilian Stone Design neglected to monitor air quality and did not establish a hearing protection program for its staff. These oversights violate federal workplace safety standards.

Silica dust is a known hazard in industries that involve cutting, grinding, or polishing materials containing crystalline silica. Exposure to this dust can cause lasting respiratory issues. OSHA has set clear rules for controlling silica dust, with separate guidelines for construction and other types of industries, including manufacturing.

This case highlights the ongoing need for companies to take worker safety seriously. Proper use of protective gear and monitoring air quality are crucial steps to prevent health problems down the line. OSHA’s fine serves as a reminder that workplace safety rules are in place to keep employees safe and healthy.
