Insights from Industry Recruitment: Key Takeaways

In early 2022, the Insurance Agents & Brokers (IA&B) association found itself facing a significant challenge. The organization, which supports independent insurance agencies in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware, recognized a growing talent crisis within the industry. With a commitment to sustaining their member agencies, IA&B sought a solution.

To tackle this issue, IA&B partnered with Minding Your Business (MYB), a consulting firm that specializes in helping associations. Together, they conducted extensive research and held a planning retreat to create a five-year strategy focused on talent recruitment and development.

The research included conversations with high school and college students to understand their career aspirations. It became clear that Generation Z, known for their comfort with technology, values flexibility, job security, and growth potential in their careers. They expect a work environment that allows for a balanced life, which aligns with the opportunities available in independent insurance.

Additionally, IA&B engaged with agency owners to learn about their recruitment challenges. Many expressed a need for better ways to promote the independent agent career to attract young talent. They also noted the difficulties in onboarding new hires, who often require extensive training in both technical skills and client interactions.

With this information in hand, IA&B took decisive steps. They hired a Director of Career Services to focus on recruiting diverse talent and launched the Insuring Careers Certification Program (ICCP). This new program provides flexible online training for newcomers, covering essential insurance knowledge and soft skills necessary for success in the industry.

The IA&B believes that by addressing the needs of both young professionals and agency owners, they can foster a thriving independent agency channel. The organization is optimistic that their efforts will not only attract new talent but also support the growth of the insurance industry as a whole.
