Introducing Tanner Webb, Central’s New Construction Underwriter.

Tanner Webb has taken an unconventional route to become a construction underwriter at Central Insurance. Originally a trained musician, Webb shifted gears to work as a claims adjuster before finding his passion in commercial lines underwriting. His journey began in Fort Worth, Texas, where he earned a performance degree from Texas Christian University. Even though he still enjoys playing the trombone, his focus has shifted to the fast-paced world of construction insurance.

Webb started his career in insurance with an entry-level claims position, which allowed him to gain his adjuster’s license. This experience opened the door for his current role at Central Insurance, where he joined in 2017. It was here that he discovered that insurance could be more than just a job; it could be a fulfilling career that truly makes a difference.

In 2018, after gaining valuable insights from conversations with his claims manager, Webb moved into commercial underwriting. He found that underwriting offered a mix of structure and strategy, paired with the chance to connect with people. His analytical mindset helps him assess various businesses and their unique risks and coverage needs.

Webb has embraced the importance of specialization in underwriting. While he initially appreciated the variety of a generalist model, he soon realized that larger and more complex accounts require in-depth knowledge. He credits Scott Zemberi, Central’s senior director of construction underwriting, for helping him see the potential in specializing within the field. In 2024, Webb joined the newly formed Southwest team, where he could focus on construction accounts and engage with clients directly.

A key aspect of Webb’s role is his partnership with Damien Hayden, Central’s loss control construction specialist. Together, they conduct field visits, which provide valuable insights that can change the understanding of an account. Webb emphasizes that their teamwork builds trust with agents and policyholders, showing that they are committed to understanding the nuances of each business.

For Webb, a successful day in underwriting revolves around communication and responsiveness. He understands that delays can harm relationships, so he prioritizes being available and dependable for agents. He believes that strong communication can lead to future opportunities, especially with complex accounts.

Webb is also attentive to emerging trends in construction and insurance. He highlights concerns about auto losses in busy markets like Las Vegas and notes how technology, such as telematics, is helping contractors improve safety. Additionally, he sees potential in artificial intelligence to enhance planning and quality control in construction projects.

At Central Insurance, the focus remains on providing strong support for construction accounts. Webb aims to ensure that contractors and agents feel valued and understood. He believes that building lasting partnerships is essential for success in the industry. With a growing emphasis on construction, Central is committed to investing in resources and relationships to better serve its clients. For Webb, this work is not just a job; it’s a commitment to making a positive impact.
