Iowa Man Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison for Falsifying Rolex Watch Claim

An Iowa man has been sentenced to ten years in prison for committing insurance fraud. Bryce Douglas Murphy, 33, from Peosta, pleaded guilty to charges of Insurance Fraud and Fraudulent Practice, both classified as Class D felonies. His case was investigated by the Iowa Insurance Division’s Fraud Bureau.

Murphy made a false claim to an insurance company, stating that two Rolex watches were stolen from his hotel room while he was attending an NFL game. To back up his claim, he submitted several documents, including a purchase receipt for the watches.

However, the investigation revealed that Murphy had previously filed a similar claim in 2019, receiving nearly $10,000 for that incident. Further scrutiny uncovered that the receipt he provided was fake and that the Rolex watches were actually counterfeit. He was arrested on June 12, 2023.

After entering his guilty plea, Murphy was sentenced to ten years in prison and ordered to pay a fine of $2,395. This case highlights the serious consequences of insurance fraud and the efforts of the Iowa Insurance Division to combat such crimes.
