Michigan DIFS Urges Consumers to Stay Vigilant About Cybersecurity

The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is using Cybersecurity Awareness Month as a chance to remind people in the state to protect themselves from scammers and cyberattacks. With so much happening online, the department wants everyone to take simple but important steps to keep their personal information safe.

DIFS suggests starting with strong, unique passwords. Experts recommend using at least 12 characters and avoiding the same password for more than one account. To make managing these easier, using a password manager is a smart move. Adding another layer of security through multi-factor authentication—like a code sent to your phone or a fingerprint scan—can also help block bad actors.

People should be careful when clicking on links or opening attachments, especially if they come from unexpected emails or pop-ups. It’s best to verify with the sender directly, but not by replying to the suspicious message or using any contact details in it. Keeping your phone, computer, and apps updated is another key step, as these updates often fix security holes.

DIFS also warns residents to watch out for scams. Banks and credit unions won’t ask for your passwords or account numbers over calls, texts, or emails. If you ever suspect a message might be fake, the safest approach is to reach out to your bank using the contact info on your statement or their official website.

On the behind-the-scenes side, DIFS keeps reminding financial institutions to review and improve their security measures regularly. The department also enforces rules under the Michigan Insurance Data Security Law. This law requires licensed insurers and producers to have strong security programs and to report any cybersecurity incidents involving private information.

By highlighting these tips and regulations, DIFS aims to help Michigan residents and the financial community reduce the risk of cyber threats and keep sensitive data protected.
