Oklahoma Insurance Department’s Fire Classifications Help Homeowners Save $22 Million

Homeowners across Oklahoma are saving big on their insurance premiums this year thanks to efforts by the Oklahoma Insurance Department’s Fire Protection Classification Division. In 2024 alone, these efforts have helped residents save around $22 million on their insurance costs.

The savings come from improvements in fire protection ratings across the state. These ratings, which range from Class 1 to Class 10, are based on standards set by organizations like Verisk, the National Fire Protection Association, and the American Water Association. When a community’s fire protection class improves, residents often see a 4 to 8 percent drop in their insurance premiums each year.

Insurance Commissioner Glen Mulready expressed pride in the division’s work, highlighting how their efforts directly benefit homeowners by lowering their insurance bills. The division works closely with local fire departments, community leaders, 911 operators, and water services. Their goal is to ensure that fire protection systems meet key standards, which leads to better safety and lower risk, ultimately cutting insurance costs.

Nearly one-fifth of Oklahoma’s more than 900 fire protection areas saw better ratings in 2024. Since Mulready took office, the number of areas rated as Fire Protection Class 1 has grown from just three to nine. This improvement shows how the department’s work is making a real difference for communities throughout the state.

For homeowners, this means more than just savings—it means stronger protection and peace of mind knowing their community is prepared. Oklahoma’s focus on improving fire safety and insurance ratings is a win-win for everyone involved.
