Personnel Changes: BHSI Initiates Program Business in Canada under Tran’s Leadership; Aspen Appoints Cushway as Head of International and UK Casualty Insurance in New Position

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) is expanding its presence in Canada by launching a new program business, led by David Tran. With over 20 years of experience in underwriting and strategic relationships, Tran will head this effort, focusing on creating insurance solutions through partnerships with program administrators, MGAs, and brokers. Based in Toronto, he steps into this role following a successful tenure as vice president of National Strategic Relationships at another insurer.

Andrew Knight, BHSI’s country manager for Canada, highlighted that this move is part of a broader strategy to grow their reach and product offerings across the country. Tran’s background and expertise are expected to play a critical role in driving this new initiative.

Meanwhile, Aspen Insurance Holdings Ltd., a Bermuda-based insurer, has appointed Ryan Cushway as head of International and U.K. Casualty Insurance. The new role, effective August 1, 2025, combines leadership across Aspen’s U.K. operations and aims to streamline their approach to casualty insurance. Cushway has been with Aspen since 2017, most recently managing the U.K. casualty portfolio since early 2023.

The company’s leadership changes also include Leanne Bellows taking on the position of head of Excess Casualty for London and Lloyd’s Markets, reporting to Cushway. Additionally, Richard Spinks and the International Environmental team will come under Cushway’s direction. Dan Osman, an active underwriter at Syndicate 4711, expressed enthusiasm about the realignment, noting it sets the stage for continued growth and innovation.

Both companies are clearly positioning themselves for broader expansion and stronger leadership as they respond to changes in the insurance market.
