Severe Storms in Wisconsin Trigger Flooding and Power Outages

Heavy rains caused flash flooding in parts of the Midwest over the weekend, leading to power outages, stranded drivers, and widespread disruptions. The final day of the Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis, just outside Milwaukee, was canceled as the fairgrounds became flooded after several inches of rain fell.

The National Weather Service warned of ongoing flood risks in states including Wisconsin, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, and Illinois. Storms brought repeated heavy rain, hail, strong winds, and even isolated tornadoes through Monday.

Milwaukee and surrounding counties were hit the hardest, with some areas receiving up to 14 inches of rain by Sunday. The rising waters caused flooding along rivers and forced some drivers to abandon their cars on flooded roads. Nearly 18,000 homes lost power in southeast Wisconsin. In Wauwatosa, a fast-moving river flooded a local playground, adding to concerns.

Emergency crews in Milwaukee dealt with more than 600 calls, responding to flooded basements, gas leaks, power outages, and water rescues. The Red Cross opened two shelters to help people who had to leave their homes. “We’re still catching up,” said the city’s fire chief.

The storms also affected events and travel. USA Triathlon canceled its Milwaukee races, where thousands of athletes were expected. The Milwaukee Brewers played a baseball game despite parking lots being inaccessible and warned fans they might not find parking.

Authorities urged people to stay away from flooded streets and standing water. Driving or walking in these conditions remains unsafe.

The severe weather also caused damage in Nebraska. Strong winds led to one death after a tree fell on a car in eastern Nebraska. In Lincoln, storms damaged parts of the state penitentiary, forcing nearly 400 prisoners to be moved. Officials confirmed everyone was safe.

As the storm system continues, residents in the affected states are warned to stay alert and take precautions. The heavy rains and flooding are expected to persist, keeping emergency teams busy in the days ahead.
