Texas Security Services Company to Resolve Sex Discrimination Lawsuit

HSS Security, a Texas-based company that provides security services to hospitals, has agreed to pay $35,000 and take additional steps to settle a sex discrimination lawsuit brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The lawsuit claimed that the company withdrew a job offer for a security supervisor position from a highly qualified woman simply because she is female.

The issue began when HSS Security offered the woman the supervisor role, recognizing her strong qualifications. However, after meeting her, two male managers at the company objected to her hiring. Despite her reassurances about her skills and experience, the managers decided not to proceed with her employment. The company then gave the job to two male candidates who were not more qualified than the woman.

The EEOC said this was a clear violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which bans discrimination based on sex in employment. After efforts to settle the dispute through discussions failed, the agency filed a lawsuit in Houston’s federal court.

On July 7, the court approved a consent decree to resolve the case. Along with the $35,000 settlement, HSS Security must now provide annual training to its hiring managers and HR staff on preventing sex discrimination. The company also has to update its policies on workplace discrimination, post notices informing employees of their rights, and report all future complaints of discrimination in hiring to the EEOC for three years.

This case highlights the ongoing challenges women face in traditionally male-dominated jobs and the importance of enforcing equal opportunity laws. It also shows how vigilant oversight and legal action can help ensure fair hiring practices.
