Update: Ships Advised to Steer Clear of the Red Sea and Log Hormuz Routes Following Israeli Strikes on Iran.

Merchant shipping is still moving through the Strait of Hormuz, even after Israel launched significant attacks on Iran. The U.S.-led Combined Maritime Force confirmed that commercial traffic is flowing without interruption, although some shipowners are choosing to avoid the area due to rising tensions.

The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial passage for global oil transport, and Iran has previously threatened to close it in response to Western actions. Analysts warn that any closure could severely impact trade and global oil prices.

According to the Combined Maritime Force, the situation has heightened the risk of conflict in the region. Israel has stated that its recent military actions targeted Iran’s nuclear facilities, missile production sites, and military leaders, all in an effort to stop Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. Iran has denied any intentions of pursuing nuclear arms.

Jakob Larsen, a safety and security officer with the shipping association BIMCO, noted that more shipowners are exercising caution and avoiding the Red Sea and Persian Gulf. He added that if the U.S. were seen as involved in any attacks, the chances of escalation would increase significantly. This could lead to missile strikes on ships or even the laying of sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

In light of these developments, Greece and Britain have advised their merchant fleets to steer clear of the Gulf of Aden and to keep detailed logs of their voyages through the Strait of Hormuz. Greek shipowners have been urged to report the details of their vessels operating in the area to their maritime ministry. Similarly, the UK transport ministry has recommended that all UK-flagged vessels avoid the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. If they must sail through these waters, they should implement the highest security measures and limit crew on deck.

Meanwhile, the European Union’s naval mission in the Red Sea, known as Aspides, is continuing its operations but is closely monitoring the situation as it unfolds.
