US Suspends Visa Issuance for Truck Drivers Following Deadly Florida Accident

The U.S. government has announced an immediate halt on issuing work visas for commercial truck drivers. Secretary of State Marco Rubio shared the news on X, saying the move aims to protect American lives and jobs. Rubio pointed to a growing number of foreign truck drivers on U.S. roads as a safety concern and a threat to American drivers’ livelihoods.

This decision comes shortly after a deadly crash on the Florida Turnpike on August 12. The driver involved was a migrant from India who was in the U.S. illegally, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Despite his status, he had obtained a commercial driver’s license in California after receiving a federal work permit. The driver is accused of making an illegal U-turn that led to the fatal accident.

In response to the crash, the Department of Transportation launched an investigation. The incident has also heightened political tensions, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis criticizing California Governor Gavin Newsom over the situation.

This latest visa pause is part of a broader push by the Trump administration to tighten immigration rules for truck drivers. Earlier this year, the Department of Transportation began enforcing stricter English language requirements following an executive order from President Trump. The State Department has also revoked more than twice as many visas since Trump took office compared to the same time last year.

However, the truck driving industry is already struggling to find drivers. A shortage of nearly 79,000 drivers was reported in 2022. Despite that, the government issued around 1,400 H-2B visas for truckers last year, and so far 1,490 have been issued in 2025.

The visa suspension adds another challenge for an industry that is still recovering from driver shortages and tough working conditions. The government’s tough stance is meant to address safety and job concerns, but it also raises questions about how the trucking sector will meet demand moving forward.
