Washington Board to Review Insurer Use of AI

Washington Insurance Commissioner Patty Kuderer held the first meeting of the state’s new Artificial Intelligence Advisory Board in Seattle. The group’s goal is to explore how AI is being used in the insurance world and to offer ideas on creating rules, keeping an eye on developments, and helping consumers understand the technology.

At the kickoff meeting, members went over the board’s mission and shared their expectations. They talked about the role AI plays in insurance today, identified what areas need the most focus, set up working groups, and planned what to do next.

This new board builds on a message the Insurance Commissioner’s Office sent to insurers last year. That bulletin reminded companies that any decisions involving AI that affect customers must still follow Washington’s insurance laws. The notice was based on guidelines from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, showing there’s attention at both the state and national level.

By forming this advisory board, Washington is aiming to keep insurance practices fair and transparent as AI becomes more common. The meeting marked an important first step in making sure new technology is used responsibly and consumers are protected.
