Allianz SE has teamed up with artificial intelligence company Anthropic to bring AI technology into the insurance giant’s daily operations. The deal, announced on January 9, 2026, aims to help Allianz improve its services, speed up processes, and set clear standards for accuracy.
The partnership covers three main projects. The first will introduce Anthropic’s Claude AI models into Allianz’s internal platform, which is already being used by thousands of their developers. Next, they plan to create custom AI agents that will handle tasks like processing claims and managing intake paperwork for motor and health insurance. Despite this automation, Allianz says humans will still review sensitive cases to ensure care and accuracy. The final project focuses on building AI systems that record all decisions and their supporting information. This is a move to meet strict regulatory rules and maintain transparency.
Oliver Bäte, Allianz’s CEO, called the partnership “a big step in dealing with key AI challenges in insurance.” He highlighted the importance of safety and openness, which fits well with the company’s commitment to both customers and stakeholders. Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, emphasized that insurance is an area where AI’s impact is significant because it can affect millions of lives.
This collaboration comes at a time when Allianz is accelerating its use of AI across its entire business. The company plans to cut 1,500 to 1,800 jobs in its travel insurance division over the next year or so. These cuts, which represent about 6.6% to 8% of the workforce in that area, reflect how AI is reshaping customer and claims processes.
However, Allianz is stepping into a tricky AI environment. Research from MIT shows that around 95% of companies have yet to see clear financial benefits from their AI projects. So far, the biggest wins have come from making existing tasks faster and more efficient, like speeding up quote generation or reducing time spent on claims, rather than completely reinventing the business.
All in all, Allianz’s move with Anthropic marks a significant push to bring artificial intelligence closer to everyday work in insurance. It’s an effort to blend AI’s speed and power with human judgment and care, all while keeping an eye on safety and trust.
