The Kentucky Department of Insurance has unveiled new rules for its Strengthen Kentucky Homes wind-mitigation grant program. These guidelines, based on legislation passed this year, aim to help homeowners protect their properties against stronger and more frequent storms.
The program sets clear requirements for who can get the grants, how the grants will be handled, and the standards for contractors and evaluators involved. For example, roof contractors must carry at least $1 million in general liability insurance, have proper workers’ compensation for their teams, and be certified under the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety’s FORTIFIED roof standards.
Funding will be divided evenly across 15 regions in Kentucky, ensuring broad support throughout the state. To hear public feedback, the Department will hold a hearing on September 22 at 9 a.m. in Frankfort. Anyone interested in speaking at the hearing needs to notify the Department five days beforehand. Written comments will be accepted through September 30.
The Department has made the draft rules available online. Those interested can find the contractor requirements and the details on grant procedures and homeowner eligibility on the Kentucky Department of Insurance’s website.
This grant program comes at a crucial time, as more powerful storms have led to rising insurance claims and higher premiums. By helping homeowners strengthen their homes, Kentucky hopes to reduce damage and keep insurance costs more manageable.
