As hurricane season kicks off, Allstate is ramping up its efforts to help Americans prepare for severe weather. The company has found that nearly two-thirds of families in the U.S. do not have a disaster plan in place, which is concerning given the increase in frequency and intensity of storms.
In 2025 alone, Allstate has already processed over $3 billion in claims related to weather events. This staggering number highlights the urgent need for homeowners and renters to take proactive steps to protect themselves and their property. Andrea Bessling, the claims field director for Allstate’s National Catastrophe Team, emphasized the importance of being prepared, stating that readiness can significantly impact recovery when disasters strike.
To assist with disaster preparedness, Allstate recommends several key actions. Homeowners and renters should review their insurance coverage, especially flood insurance, which is often not included in standard policies. Keeping a video inventory of belongings and reinforcing vulnerable areas of the home, such as garage doors and roof shingles, can also be beneficial.
Allstate suggests basic flood prevention measures like testing sump pumps, cleaning gutters, and installing backflow preventers. Bessling pointed out that seemingly minor issues, like loose shingles or branches, can turn into dangerous hazards during a storm.
In addition to individual preparedness, Allstate is deploying 20 Mobile Claims Centers to areas at high risk for disasters. These mobile units will provide on-the-spot assistance, including claims processing and property assessments using aerial imagery.
Allstate’s disaster response also includes emotional support for those affected. The company offers comfort kits and therapy dogs to help individuals cope during challenging times. Over the past two decades, Allstate has handled more than 7.3 million claims related to catastrophes.
Bessling reassured customers that Allstate is committed to helping them feel confident and prepared. The company has resources available, including the Good Hands Recovery Guide and information on fraud protection. Customers can file claims through various channels, including phone, mobile app, website, or by contacting their agent.
As hurricane season begins, Allstate is urging homeowners to take these steps seriously to mitigate potential losses and ensure a quicker recovery.
