Employers advised to learn from Gen Z in the age of AI.

Employers are being urged to pay attention to Generation Z when it comes to using artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace. This younger generation is not only comfortable with AI but is also leading the way in its adoption. Demis Bril, a senior director at Instant Offices, emphasized that supporting Gen Z is about more than just integrating them into the workforce; it’s also about learning from their tech-savvy approaches.

Bril stated that businesses that take action now to close the AI skills gap will be the ones that shape the future, rather than lagging behind. Recent studies show that Gen Z is at the forefront of AI use globally. A Samsung Electronics study found that a significant majority of Gen Z in countries like South Korea (80%), Germany (61%), the UK (59%), the US (56%), and France (55%) view AI as a crucial resource for their work.

Additionally, research from Google Workspace highlighted that 93% of Gen Z leaders in the US use multiple AI tools weekly. They use AI for various tasks such as improving writing, enhancing communication, and overcoming challenges like task paralysis. Bril noted that Gen Z employees expect to use AI, and they often automate tasks and experiment with new methods without much support from their employers.

This trend has led to a phenomenon called Shadow IT, where employees use technology without their company’s approval. Bret Kinsella from TELUS Digital pointed out that when companies fail to provide necessary AI tools, employees tend to find their own solutions, which can create issues.

To better utilize Gen Z’s skills, employers should view their comfort with AI as a valuable asset. Companies are encouraged to create roles that allow young employees to champion AI adoption and help others learn. Implementing reverse mentoring, where Gen Z can teach senior leaders about AI, is another effective strategy.

To foster a supportive environment, companies should focus on continuous feedback and open communication. Instant Offices also recommends several key areas for investment, including providing clear career paths, modernizing training for the AI age, and ensuring employee well-being to retain young talent. Gen Z wants to work for companies that align with their values, so leading with purpose and inclusivity is essential.
