Washington Commissioner Assembles Advisory Board to Monitor Insurer AI Usage

Washington Insurance Commissioner Patty Kuderer brought together a new group this week in Seattle to talk about how artificial intelligence is being used in the insurance world. The meeting marked the first gathering of the state’s Artificial Intelligence Advisory Board, which will focus on shaping policies, overseeing regulations, and helping consumers understand AI in insurance.

During their initial session, the members discussed their goals and the board’s plan moving forward. They looked at how AI tools are currently applied by insurance companies and decided on priorities and smaller teams to work on specific issues.

This board builds on a message sent last year by the Office of the Insurance Commissioner to insurance companies in Washington. That reminder stated that any decisions involving AI or advanced computer technologies still need to follow state insurance laws. The guidance was based on a model created by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

Commissioner Kuderer sees the advisory board as a way to support new laws, create rules, and guide the agency’s own policies around AI and innovation in insurance. The group’s work will likely touch on important topics like how insurance carriers use AI, data-driven approaches, and the growing role of technology in the industry.

The formation of this board shows Washington’s effort to keep pace with rapid changes in technology while making sure consumers are protected and informed. As AI continues to influence how insurance companies operate, this new advisory team will play a key role in shaping the future of the industry at the state level.
