North Carolina Man Who Claimed Nearly $300,000 in Travel Insurance Losses Arrested

Oscar Rafael Ruiz, a 44-year-old man from Charlotte, North Carolina, found himself in serious trouble after filing nearly $300,000 in travel insurance claims—most of which turned out to be fake. Over the past two years, Ruiz made multiple claims about lost luggage and canceled flights, backed by forged documents like fake hotel bills, credit card statements, and Amazon receipts.

Authorities say Ruiz actually collected about $22,240 from these claims and tried to get another $262,100 before insurers grew suspicious and launched an investigation. The North Carolina Department of Insurance revealed that Ruiz was charged with 52 felony counts related to making false insurance claims.

Ruiz was arrested on July 8 by the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. The next day, he showed up in Mecklenburg County District Court after being released on a $260,000 secured bond. The case highlights how insurance fraud can rack up to significant amounts and the steps officials take when they catch someone faking their way through claims.
