Insurance broker Aon has announced several leadership changes within its reinsurance division, naming Alfonso Valera as CEO of International for Reinsurance and Steve Hofmann as CEO of Americas for Reinsurance. Valera will oversee the UK, Europe, Middle East, Africa (EMEA), and Asia-Pacific (APAC) regions, while Hofmann will be responsible for North and Latin America. Alongside these appointments, George Attard has been named global head of Strategy, and Tomas Novotny has taken on the role of chairman for International.
These moves come amid a shift involving John Neal, the former CEO of Lloyd’s, who was initially set to become Aon’s CEO of Reinsurance earlier this year. Neal has been on gardening leave since leaving Lloyd’s in May but never actually joined Aon. Instead, he will start a new role at AIG on December 1, leading their General Insurance operations in North America and international commercial lines, as well as AIG’s global personal insurance business.
An Aon spokesperson said these new leadership roles were planned before Neal made his decision to join AIG. They brought the announcements forward to clarify the team structure following Neal’s move. Andy Marcell, who heads Aon’s integrated Risk Capital and Human Capital operations across various business lines including reinsurance, will continue in his current role, with no plans to find a new CEO for reinsurance.
Valera brings a wealth of experience, having previously shared duties as co-CEO of EMEA for Reinsurance and served as CEO and general manager of Aon Re Iberia. Hofmann also has a solid background with Aon, previously holding the position of U.S. CEO of Reinsurance. Attard steps into the global head of Strategy role after serving as CEO of Reinsurance for APAC and spending 17 years leading strategy and client relations in the region. Novotny has held various leadership roles, including co-CEO of EMEA for Reinsurance and chairman of the board for Central and Eastern Europe.
Aon expressed support for Neal’s new role at AIG and confidence in the strength of their current reinsurance team led by Marcell. The company looks forward to continuing its work with clients under this new leadership setup.
