State Farm sued over allegations of denying claims to maximize profits, homeowner asserts

A homeowner in New Mexico has filed a federal lawsuit accusing State Farm of deliberately underpaying insurance claims to boost profits. Koteiba Azzam, who lives in Sunland Park, alleges that after a pipe burst in his home in January 2025, State Farm denied full coverage for the damage, including a needed roof replacement. The suit claims the insurer’s investigation was flawed and the claim was closed too soon, leaving his property in bad shape.

But the case is about more than one claim. Azzam’s complaint says State Farm, with help from consulting firm McKinsey & Company, created a claims system called "Fire ACE." This method reportedly pushes the company to cut payouts, reject claims, and make legal battles hard for policyholders. The lawsuit says the insurer would initially deny water damage claims to see who would accept the decision quietly. Those who challenged it faced aggressive legal tactics meant to wear them down.

The suit also points to a conflict of interest where adjusters and contractors were rewarded for keeping claim costs low. It adds that State Farm used set payout amounts based on profit goals rather than true repair costs. The company is also accused of discouraging claims lawyers and escalating cases to tough litigation even if the claim was valid. Azzam calls this a way to warn lawyers not to challenge the insurer.

Among the charges in the lawsuit are breach of good faith, fraud, and violations of New Mexico insurance laws. The complaint claims State Farm misled policyholders, failed to communicate properly, and looked for ways to deny claims only after they were filed.

Azzam wants financial compensation, including damages and legal fees. The lawsuit paints a picture of an insurer putting profits over fair treatment of customers. State Farm has not yet responded to the allegations. The case is being closely watched as it could reveal how one of the largest insurance companies handles claims behind the scenes.
