Lloyd’s Investigates Conduct of Former CEO Previously Poised to Join AIG

Lloyd’s of London is looking into allegations involving its former CEO, John Neal, who was supposed to begin a new role at American International Group (AIG) next month. However, AIG announced that Neal will no longer join the company, citing “personal circumstances.”

The investigation started after Lloyd’s Chairman Charles Roxburgh learned about rumors of possible historic policy breaches linked to Neal. This led Lloyd’s to launch an independent review with help from a law firm. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Neal had a relationship with a company employee before stepping down earlier this year. Neal has not responded to requests for comment, and AIG declined to comment on the matter.

Neal had a history of similar issues. When he was CEO at Australian insurer QBE Insurance Group, the board docked 20% off his bonus in 2017 after discovering he hadn’t disclosed a relationship with a subordinate. He left the company months later.

Sheila Cameron, CEO of the Lloyd’s Market Association, expressed support for the ongoing investigation and praised the new leadership at Lloyd’s for pushing for cultural change and transparency. She acknowledged that while most people in the market do great work, the actions of a few former leaders could damage the reputation of the whole industry.

This situation highlights growing attention on leadership conduct in the insurance sector. Many are watching closely to see what results come from Lloyd’s inquiry and whether it leads to stronger rules or changes in how such issues are addressed going forward.

Neal had been set to begin his role as president at AIG on December 1, but that plan ended after the investigation details emerged. The New York Times also noted that AIG’s decision followed their inquiries about Neal’s past undisclosed relationship with a subordinate.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and ethical behavior in leadership roles. Lloyd’s is expected to release more information once their review is complete.
