Insurance is facing a lot of change these days, and professionals in the field are being asked to do more than just sell policies. They need to help businesses plan for the future, handle risks, and find ways to grow. One expert leading the way in this shift is Ben Wright, the principal US economist at The Hartford’s Global Insights Center.
Wright and his team focus on studying big economic trends, world events, and risks in various industries to give insurance companies useful information. With nearly two years at The Hartford, Wright brings experience from government agencies like the Bureau of Labor Statistics, consulting, and financial services. He finds the insurance role particularly rewarding because it helps build a stronger economy while supporting businesses in managing risks.
A big part of The Hartford’s approach involves using data and analysis to prepare the insurance sector for whatever comes next. Wright explains that just researching the big picture isn’t enough. His team works to connect global trends to real impacts on insurance clients. For example, in 2024 they spotted growing concerns about tariffs early on. When new tariffs were introduced in 2025, their earlier work helped the company react quickly and effectively.
To meet today’s challenges and opportunities, The Hartford has grown its team of economists and analysts to five people, covering more topics and regions across the US and around the world. Wright says their work is about more than avoiding risk—they want to be partners who help clients grow and stay strong.
Wright also shared advice for women interested in driving change in insurance. He emphasized putting customers first, acting quickly, being creative with new ideas, and working well with others.
On October 30, Wright will bring these ideas to the Women in Insurance Summit in Los Angeles. He will join a panel discussing how to handle inflation, interest rates, market ups and downs, and new ways fraud is changing. The event is a chance for leaders to share ideas and support each other in shaping the future of insurance.
